In the first week of March this year cities around the world will hold the annual Israel Apartheid Week, or IAW for short. Organized by the Students Against Israeli Apartheid, or SAIA, it is a Molotov cocktail of political intolerance, illiberal personal attacks, and lurking, latent antisemitism.

The purpose of the event is to dupe the general public, especially impressionable students, into thinking that Israel is an apartheid state akin to South Africa before the ANC's triumph in 1994. Never mind that Israel affords all of its Arab citizens equal political and legal rights, something noticeably absent in South Africa. Never mind that access to public institutions, such as education and health care, is granted to all equally. Of course, if one repeats a lie a thousand times, people will recognize it as truth.

In an attempt to combat the one-sided rhetoric on campus, Zionist groups at York have been working to represent Jewish students. Most recently, Hasbara Fellowships and Betar launched their "Terror built this fence" campaign in order to challenge the false allegation that Israel's security fence along its boundary with the West Bank acts as an apartheid wall.

One very important thing that all of us can do is to counter the endless lies and distortions of Israel's history and character that appear in the press, mass media, on the Internet, and even in scholarly journals. These distortions and outright falsehoods are a major reason why Israel is in such deep trouble, and in danger of "going under." Because the entire world has been led to believe an inaccurate, grossly distorted "narrative" of the conflict, the government of Israel feels it has no choice but to make concessions to the demands of its enemies, in order to appease world opinion. The organizers of this week repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel in their lectures, as well as spreading incitement and hatred toward the thousands of Jewish students that attend the university.

Dear Mr. Delaney,
I would like to file a formal grievance on behalf of Betar-Tagar @ UofT against the Student Affairs recognized club The Arab Students' Collective (ASC) on the grounds that they are in violation of the University of Toronto’s prohibition on speech and actions inciting hate as well as discrimination based on religious background.

Students from 10 campuses and locations across Canada will be coming together on Tuesday, March 29th, 2005 12:30pm EST, simultaneously to take part in a live and interactive event with current Israeli Finance Minister, and former Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu.

For awhile, Jewish students at the University of Toronto, treated the week of January 31st as a special occasion. That is when IsraelFEST takes place. It is a week-long celebration of Israeli culture. But this year, Pro-Palestinians chose to taint the week and score a cheap political point. Otherwise known as "Israel Apartheid Week," the event has been a collection of hatred towards Jews crafted in lies and deceit disguised as facts.
